The ABC book began as a playful discovery within Tierney Gearon’s personal photo archive — a treasure chest of whimsical, joyful moments captured with her children and their friends.
As Gearon revisited these images, she began to see patterns — photographs that seemed to sing in rhythm with alliterative phrases, as if each one whispered its own letter of the alphabet. Inspired, she set out to create a full alphabet, photographing new scenes to fill the missing letters and connect words with imagery in a vivid, surprising way.
Gearon, long known for pushing the envelope of contemporary photography, reimagines the traditional children’s alphabet book through an artist’s lens. Each letter is brought to life by one of her photographs: A becomes Airplane Adventure, B is Bear Boy, C transforms into Clown Car, and so on. The result is at once an inventive photo book and an enchanting, unexpected take on the alphabet — Gearon’s most playful and lighthearted work to date.
Created over a three-year period as a creative collaboration with her children and their friends, this project was both art and adventure. As the images came to life, her children learned their alphabet along the way. The photographs are imaginative, painterly, and full of wonder — inviting young readers to explore not just letters, but the limitless world of seeing.
